Bosnia and Herzegovina - A Road Trip Through Europe

A Road Trip Through Europe

8 juni - 7 juli 2018 (30 days)

We drive out of Sarajevo, climbing the hills on the far side of the Miljacka River. The navigation takes us up into the mountains via back streets, some of which are very steep. I estimate that in some sections, the gradient is well over 20 percent—best to take a run-up and hope no one comes the other way. In the Trebevic Mountains, the 1984 Winter Olympics were held. The facilities are now heavily decayed, with the remnants of the graffiti-covered bobsleigh track standing out as a symbol of this decline. It’s strange to walk through the concrete channel where, during the war, snipers once lay in wait. From the hill, we also have a breathtaking view over Sarajevo, and it’s clear how large the city is.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - From Amsterdam to Tokyo

From Amsterdam to Tokyo

1 mei 2016 - 8 augustus 2016 (100 days)

The streets in Bosnia look noticeably poorer compared to Croatia. Some houses still bear damage from the Balkan War. It’s certainly not the landscape — the nature is stunning. The road winds through hills and mountains. Tonight, we’re staying in a hotel with a view of the old town of Mostar. The GPS leads us into the old center. When we’re practically at the famous old bridge of Mostar, we should be at the hotel — but we can’t find it. A woman in a shop calls the hotel for us. “Stay here,” she says, “someone is coming.” A man soon gets into our car and shows us the way. We had already passed it. Because Mostar has mostly one-way streets, it’s hard to turn back. From the hotel, I walk straight to the old bridge, the Stari Most. The bridge was built in 1557 over the Neretva River. Dusk is beginning to fall over Mostar.
