Finally: four o’clock! The luggage is wet, which is especially a heavier burden for the porters. Outside, it is still dark, but at least it’s dry. No one has really slept well. During breakfast—pancakes—it starts drizzling again. Not a good sign for Machu Picchu. Wearing a raincoat, with a poncho over it and a flashlight at the ready, we set off just after five towards Machu Picchu. After a few bends along a narrow path, we are already standing in line for the checkpoint. This only opens at half past five. After getting another stamp, we walk along the Inca Trail in a long line of hikers. The rain gives everything a rather bleak look. After about twenty minutes, the path becomes visible without the flashlight. Just as well, since several flashlights are already growing dim. Around half past seven, we approach the Sun Gate. From here, you can see Machu Picchu from above. Unfortunately… Machu Picchu is completely shrouded under a thick blanket of clouds. Luckily, Lucio can point out where it lies beneath the clouds… The disappointment is great for everyone.
