Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden. It is the most densely populated urban area in Scandinavia. The Stockholm metropolitan area is home to about 22% of Sweden’s population. Stockholm was founded around 1250 and is strategically located on fourteen islands on the southeastern coast of Sweden, at the mouth of Lake Mälaren. Stockholm is renowned for its beauty, its buildings and architecture, its abundance of clean and open water, and its many parks. For this reason, the Swedish capital is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North.
