Latvia - To the Far North of Europe

To the Far North of Europe

1 juli 2017 -26 juli 2017 (26 days)

It’s already three o’clock. We begin the final stretch of the route to Riga. We cross the border and enter Latvia. Tonight, we want to camp by the Gulf of Riga. Jurmala is an old fishing village that has grown into a true holiday paradise. During the summer months, a special toll of two euros must be paid to enter. We enter a random campsite into the navigation system: Camping Nemo. At reception, the girl tells us we can first take a look around. On the left side are small wooden huts for hikers, all of which are in poor condition. The sanitary facilities could also use some renovation. Although the campsite is past its prime, we decide to unfold our rooftop tent. After all, we’re only staying one night. At the car, we prepare macaroni. After dinner, we walk along the beach by the bay. The sun is low on the horizon.

Just across the border, near Pilsrundale, lies Rundale Palace in the middle of open fields. This beautiful Baroque palace was built as the summer residence for the Duke of Courland. The palace was designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The palace fell into serious disrepair during the occupation but is now being restored. In the throne, ballroom, and banquet hall, one can once again see the opulence of former times. The palace gardens have also been redesigned. From the well-maintained garden, the palace looks even more magnificent.
