Ireland - The shopping street of Dublin

Today we set out for Dublin — the end of the journey is already in sight. We drive to the former monastery of Clonmacnoise, located in the center of Ireland. This site was once an important trading hub due to the intersection of the main east–west route and the nearby river. Over the centuries, the Clonmacnoise monastery was destroyed a total of sixteen times — by the English, but also by the Vikings. The complex was completely destroyed for the last time at the end of the 16th century and was never rebuilt afterward. The site contains a beautiful example of an Irish High Cross. A replica is displayed outside, while the original can be viewed inside the visitor center. In addition to the crosses, Clonmacnoise features several churches and round towers. From Clonmacnoise, we continue by bus toward Dublin. Along the way, we stop in a small village, where we also have lunch. Around three o’clock, we enter Dublin. By bus, we take a city tour through the center, while Karen provides commentary about the city along the way. We visit Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and then drive on to our hotel just outside Dublin. There isn’t enough time today to explore the city, but we will have some free time tomorrow afternoon. In the evening, there is live music in the bar of the restaurant, and the whole group gathers there to enjoy it.
