Iceland - The view from Hallgrimskirkja

The alarm is set for 3:30 a.m. Yet both of us are awake before the alarm goes off. We quickly pack our things. Since we can’t get breakfast at the hotel so early, we were given a kind of breakfast pack: a juice box, yogurt, and fruit. We eat the yogurt and banana right away. At quarter to four, we hand in the hotel key and walk to the car for the last time. In the dark, we drive out of Reykjavik. It’s about a 45-minute drive to Keflavík airport. Meanwhile, the first streak of light appears on the horizon. An orange glow announces the new day. Just before the airport, we stop at a gas station. We fill up the car. Then we drive to the car rental drop-off zone. No one is there. We park the car and drop the key in a special slot. From the rental company, it’s a five-minute walk to the departure hall. At exactly five o’clock, we enter the airport hall. There is a long queue to check in. All passengers for all Icelandair flights are in one line. The queue behind us grows quickly. Only four counters are open. Fortunately, more open rapidly. All sixteen counters open. After checking in, we head to baggage control. We are immediately served. It’s not yet six o’clock when we have completed all procedures. We order coffee and wait to board the flight. Flight FI 506 departs at 7:50 a.m. The flight goes smoothly. Around 12:30 p.m. Dutch time, we land again at Schiphol. There’s still some taxiing to do to the terminal building. We take the train home.
