1992 (28 days)
In the morning, we wake up to the sun. Many interrailers are already busy packing. Jip and Jip (Detmar and Dirk Willem), two boys from Gorredijk, are still on board. They were supposed to get off at Corfu, but the boat didn’t stop there at all (as we had already predicted). Now they are coming with us to a campsite in Patras.
The quay is a mess. Taxi drivers try to lure us to distant campsites for a lot of money. We’ve already chosen the campsite, but we still need to find a taxi. Through the Tourist Information, we agree on a price of 600 drachmas (about €6.60) and also find a driver willing to take us. Unfortunately, no other driver is willing to go for that price, so our driver has to make two trips. In the afternoon, we take it easy at the campsite. The two-plus days of traveling have been very intense. At the end of the afternoon, we stroll into the city with Jip and Jip. They are fun guys, but sometimes they behave a bit strangely. Well, what can you expect from Frisians? After dinner, we try to get in touch with home. This isn’t easy. After many attempts, Sandra finally manages to get a connection, only to realize she had dialed the wrong number. Luckily, we manage to contact them afterward. We explore the city and try to find the fortress. By consistently choosing the uphill path at every intersection, you eventually reach the fortress after 193 steps. The fortress is dark and closed. Back down in the center, near the water, we have a drink. By coincidence, we notice a clock that is an hour fast. It turns out that clocks in Greece are one hour ahead of Italy, which will be very convenient for catching the train tomorrow. At quarter past twelve (so actually quarter past one local time), we go to bed. It’s my first time sleeping in a tent and on a campsite.
