As I close the door behind me on my way to Schiphol, I reflect on a busy week behind me—hectic at work and little time to pack. Last night at half past twelve I zipped up my travel bag. Now, six hours later, I’m on my way to Schiphol with my bag. I hope to catch up on some sleep on the plane. Checking in at the self-service kiosk doesn’t work, but the desk attendant helps me out. She turns out to be from Voorhout as well. A little later, I pass through security and baggage control. On the plane, I immediately meet fellow travelers; everyone is seated together. As soon as the plane takes off, I try to sleep. I pull the blanket tightly over me because it’s cold on the plane. I manage a few hours, but after that, sleep eludes me. All in all, the ten-hour flight to Houston feels quite long. Around one o’clock U.S
. time, I land in Houston. I get through customs relatively quickly. In the departure hall, I have a beer. I need to bridge a five-hour wait until my next flight. At the gate, I meet Erik, the tour leader. I’ve traveled with Erik before in Jordan. It’s nice to see him again. At six o’clock, we take off toward San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Outside, darkness is already falling. I realize I’ve been traveling for twenty hours. I’m tired and fall asleep more easily now. The walking up and down the aisle still disturbs me occasionally. In San José, the bus is ready to take me to the hotel in the suburbs of the city. I quickly find my room and dive into bed. Within minutes, I’m asleep.
