Zambia > Travel day to Luangwa Bridge

Dag 20 - Tuesday, November 24, 2009

During the night it rains for a while. The tents are still wet when we pack them up in the morning. We were supposed to leave at six, but it’s uncertain whether the truck can drive over the muddy track. Before we depart we take a new group photo, since yesterday’s attempt failed due to the threatening weather. When we leave at half past six, the safari jeeps are also present, ready to pull out the truck if needed. Aron steers the truck smoothly over the slippery clay. Back on the paved road we drive southwest. It’s the same road we took on the way here, which means more jolting. One bench has already given way, and for one of the two tables it becomes too much—the table breaks. Aron removes the tabletop and we continue on our way.

Zambia - Local shops along the roadside

After sixty kilometers we turn right towards the capital, Lusaka. In Chipata we stop for coffee. At a small counter we can order drinks, though the process is extremely slow. Meanwhile, a painter is at work on the facade. Dressed in torn clothes, he pays no attention to the customers at the counter. We entertain ourselves by watching him work and by guessing which customers will end up leaning against the wet wall. After an hour we continue driving towards Luangwa Bridge. Along the way we stop for lunch and a few toilet breaks. Around half past four we cross the bridge over the Luangwa. Here is also the campsite for tonight. We quickly set up the tents, I take a shower, and order a beer at the bar. The owner turns out to be originally Dutch. From the veranda we have a view of the Luangwa River. Tonight is Israel’s last meal. After dinner we thank Israel for the delicious food, and thank Aron for the safe driving. We also thank them both for their enthusiasm and their help with everything.
