Zambia - The main road in the capital of Zambia Lusaka

At six o’clock the truck is loaded again for the second travel day in a row. Livingstone is still 640 kilometers away, which means another long day on the road. Hopefully we will reach Livingstone around six o’clock this evening. After more than three hours we drive into the outskirts of Lusaka. The traffic gets heavier, the roads wider, and there are more stone houses and factories. We also have to slow down for traffic lights, which I’ve hardly seen at all during this trip. Lusaka has 1.1 million inhabitants. At the Shoprite we stop for some groceries and a cup of coffee. The service is very slow, so we return later than planned. We quickly continue through the city center along Cairo Road, heading further towards Livingstone. On the way we pass Kafue, the town where Gerard and Diene lived temporarily forty years ago. They will return here at the end of the journey. We also cross the railway line several times. This is the single-track connection between Cairo and Cape Town. Around half past five we are about sixty kilometers from Livingstone. Roadworks are in progress here, and on the last stretch we follow detours. We bump along the sandy road to Livingstone. Just after half past six we arrive at the Waterfront resort, a few kilometers outside Livingstone. We hurry to the adventure ticket office. The office closes at seven, and we just make it in time. I book the excursions for the coming days and also order a T-shirt with the travel route printed on the back. In the evening we have dinner on the terrace at Waterfront. It takes a little getting used to that we now have to choose our own meals from the menu.
