Mozambique > On the way to Vilanculos

We leave Tofo early in the morning. By the time the reception opens at seven, I have already had breakfast. I return the towels, settle the deposit against the bar bill, and get into the truck. We follow the main road heading north. We pass a few bays, but mostly drive past traditional villages. Today we are sitting all the way at the front. The windshield above the cabin is just too high to see through, so we place some mats on the seats to enjoy the view.

A fun sight. I find it striking how large areas of land are being burned to preserve fertile soil. You’d think the land is so dry that everything would catch fire immediately. Every now and then, thick smoke clouds drift across the road. That this is not entirely without danger becomes clear quickly. Two cars in front of us crash into each other in such a smoke curtain. They hadn’t seen each other and both veered slightly inward. The road is blocked. The whole village comes out, and the police are present. Yet no one takes action. They are waiting for the insurance agent. When he takes too long, the cars are eventually pushed to the side. The road is open again, and we continue. Around noon, we stop for lunch. We park right next to a construction site under a tree. Perhaps not the most beautiful spot, but at least it has shade, as it has become quite hot. Israel quickly produces a delicious lunch. Afterwards, we continue toward Vilanculos. It is also warm in the bus, and I try to sleep a bit. Around half past four, we enter Vilanculos. The Baobab campsite is on the south side of the town center. We set up our tents around the enormous Baobab tree. The tents are easy to set up and go up quickly. At the tents, we have a drink while waiting for the meal. Today, Israel has prepared pumpkin soup, potatoes, meat, and broccoli. A top-class cook!
