Germany > Arrival Düsseldorf

Dag 1 - Tuesday January 21, 2025

At one in the afternoon, I leave my house and drive to Sassenheim to pick up Rita. We're going on a two-week cruise through the Caribbean. Our flight to Barbados departs from Düsseldorf on Thursday. Today, we're already driving to this German city so that we have an extra day to enjoy it.Just after setting off, the navigation system reports a delay further along the route. The estimated arrival time increases significantly. Apparently, there's been an accident. Fortunately, an alternative route is quickly suggested. We stay in the Netherlands a bit longer and cross the border at Venlo. Around 4:30 PM, we arrive at our hotel in Neuss, a suburb of Düsseldorf. We can park the car for free in the lot behind the hotel. To open the room, we receive a code. Since we don’t need a physical hotel key, we won’t have to check out at the reception desk on Thursday. That’s convenient because we plan to leave before 6 AM.We skip our original plan to take the metro into Düsseldorf for dinner. Instead, we walk to a simple restaurant nearby. We’re warmly welcomed. Other guests also strike up a conversation about their experiences with the Netherlands. The waiter even manages to say a few words in Dutch. The gyros, souvlaki, and fries taste great. Back in our room, we have a glass of wine before going to sleep.
