December 28 2018 February 2 2019 (39 days)
We have a long day ahead. We leave the northernmost part of New Zealand. At half past seven, we drive away from Russell. For the last time, we cross the Waikare Inlet by ferry. It’s Sunday morning, and only a few cars are on the ferry. We drive back toward Auckland. Today, the roads are much quieter, and we can drive everywhere without delays. Around eleven o’clock, we approach Auckland again. The weather is beautiful, and from the Harbour Bridge, we can see Auckland’s skyline. The tall Sky Tower rises above the city. On the other side, we leave the city again, heading toward Hamilton. After fifty kilometers, we turn toward the Coromandel Peninsula, our destination for tonight. Around half past one, we approach Hahei on the peninsula. At the edge of the town, a large parking area has been set up. We choose not to use the shuttle bus but to walk to Hahei Beach. Hahei Beach is said to be the most beautiful beach in New Zealand. The bay is nestled between rocks. The golden sand lies beautifully under the bright blue sky. Several islands are visible off the coast. Truly, this is a stunning location. From the beach, we follow the walking path to Cathedral Cove.
The path goes up and down toward one of New Zealand’s most famous bays. The last part of the walk descends via a staircase. We reach the beach. To our left lies Cathedral Cove. A ten-meter-high rock arch provides passage to a second bay. The beach and a few rocks in the sea stand out beautifully here. Back in Hahei, we order a beer at a terrace. The weather is still wonderful. Our hotel for today is in Whitianga, about thirty kilometers from Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula. Upon arrival, there is no one at the reception. A note is left for us: “Your room is number four. The door is open.” It’s a small, cozy apartment. For the evening, we do some shopping at the supermarket and have dinner in our apartment.
