Travelogue The Hunza Valley in Pakistan

August 30 September 19 2024 (21 days)

Pakistan > A rest day in Karimabad

Dag 13 - Wednesday, September 11, 2024

Today is a free day in Karimabad. At eight o’clock, breakfast is ready again in the hotel garden. Above the mountain ranges, a dark sky hangs. It also feels cooler. Will it stay dry today? As an optional activity, there is the possibility to walk along the irrigation canals of Karimabad. At ten o’clock, we leave the hotel. First, we walk a short distance toward the center. Then we turn off at the luxury Serena Hotel. We follow a narrow dirt path along a fast-flowing stream. At various points, this water is diverted to distribute it over the fields. Rakaposhi looks beautiful and completely free of clouds. On the other side of the valley, a dark sky still hangs. So far, this cloud has not crossed the mountain ridge. We turn off and descend via a narrow path between houses. A staircase made of boulders has been created. Water also flows along the path here. Eventually, we reach the main road

. The plan was to have lunch here, but it is still too early. As an alternative, we walk back to the hotel along the road. For those who want, it’s possible to continue walking to the neighborhood around Altit Fort—the fort we visited yesterday. I don’t choose this option. Together with Allert, I walk into Karimabad. In the small restaurant where I also had lunch two days ago, we order a sandwich. All ingredients are fetched from the supermarket next door. Only for the burger bun is the scooter used. Shortly after, the cheese chicken burger is served. The fries come after the burger is finished. At the Mountain Cup café, more toward the center, we order coffee. Just as we want to leave, it starts to blow hard and rain. The cloud has indeed crossed the mountain ridge. We order a mango shake and wait until the shower passes. When we walk back to the hotel, the wet street is much less dusty. One added advantage of the rain. In the evening, we decide to eat at the luxurious Hunza Embassy Hotel. At the reception, we are directed to the restaurant. The large hall is empty. When we order our dishes, we are told it may take thirty to forty minutes. That’s fine. My chicken manchurian tastes great. In the dark, we walk back to our own hotel. To be safe, I shine my flashlight to warn oncoming traffic.
