During the night, I feel the ferry moving. We are leaving the port. I am on my way to Turkmenistan. When I go out on deck, I see that we are still stationary. We are lying off the coast. I take a shower in my cabin and pack my luggage. Back outside, a truck driver points out that the land I can see is Azerbaijan. We are still just outside the harbor. Could that be possible? The navigation confirms the location. Tonight, we have only left the harbor. No idea when we will actually set sail. We take our chairs out of the car and find a spot in the shade on the deck. From truck drivers, we hear that we won’t sail until six o’clock this afternoon. No idea why, but we wait it out. Meanwhile, we read guidebooks about Turkmenistan and relax a bit. By six o’clock, little has changed. The wind has picked up significantly. We seem to understand that we are still not going to sail. The wind is apparently too strong. Although we can’t see the weather on the other side of the Caspian Sea, the waves here seem manageable. Some drivers are already gesturing “tomorrow, tomorrow.” A strange sensation. We have been on the move for 24 hours and are still lying off the port of Baku. For dinner, we boil water ourselves and have our own instant meal. Yesterday’s meal at the restaurant was not very satisfying. Together with a small bottle of Azerbaijani wine, this tastes just fine. When going to bed, we have already been stationary on the Caspian Sea for a full day. Without knowing when this will change, we go to sleep.
